To be honest, I've had plenty of reservations on PVD watches over the years, but once you try one like this example on, it slowly grows on you and eventually puts you under its spell – no joke, now I want one for my own collection. It shares a similar aesthetic to other better-known watches from this period, sure, with its tonneau-shaped case and black three-register dial with day-date calendar and a bright red chronograph seconds hand. Fast-forward about 500 years after its establishment, and we now have this PVD-coated Gallet chronograph that is not as well-known as other blacked-out chronographs from the 1980s. Long known for providing top-notch timekeeping instruments for military, auto-racing, and industrial applications, it makes sense how chronographs gradually became Gallet's specialty. Half of the 250-piece run of TAG Heuer Carrera Dato Limited Edition For HODINKEE was offered through the HODINKEE Shop this morning with commentators reporting that all of the 7,250 USD watches.
Gallet may not be a household name compared to the other companies I mentioned above, but the Swiss company started producing watches all the way back in 1466 (yes, really). Today, we have a black PVD-coated chronograph from Gallet that was released in the 1980s. Did this person pick up a Dato in 1969 because of its cool date window at nine o'clock? Did they compare this to a Rolex Daytona or a Universal Genève Compax? Maybe the person who received it loved chronographs, but could never remember the date? The possibilities are endless. As a result of the engraving, I wonder how and why this watch came about and what its exact background is. This particular example has a neat caseback engraving that leads me to believe this was a gift from "JGH to HFH" on June 17, 1969. Both looks are equally unconventional, but to me, the date at nine o'clock really works. 3147 with the date at 12 o'clock, but the company would later create a second execution with the date placed at nine o'clock. From Rolex, we saw the Cosmograph Daytona, and from Heuer, we saw the Carrera.

The 'Dato 45' has remained an apple in the eye of vintage collectors for years, so much so that we have gone to the 'Dato' design twice in our HODINKEE x Tag Heuer Limited Editions. The TAG Heuer Carrera Dato 45 Hodinkee Limited Edition is presented in a 39 mm stainless steel Carrera case and is powered by the caliber 02 in-house chronograph with 80-hours of power reserve. Heuer offered this reference with either a black or silver dial the example we have today is the latter with a beautiful silver sunburst dial. I nspired by the original 1965 Heuer 3147N Dato 45 Hodinkee and TAG Heuer have collaborated on a modern remake of the collectible chronograph. So when a good example comes across my desk, I get pretty excited. The "Dato 45" has been a hot topic of discussion ever since we released the TAG Heuer Carrera 'Dato' Limited Edition for HODINKEE in February.
